Google Analytics

For those of you with your own websites, I am sure you would find this free tool a very interesting addition. I have a sitemeter which gives me quite a bit of information regarding my hits to the website, i.e. location, duration of visit and referring url. Google Analytics also reports the same information but in very detailed reports that I have found very helpful.

To set up Google Analytics you need to open an account with Google, very simple process, no fees involved. They give you a couple of options of how to set the report system up with your website, I chose to add the html to each page. Extremely simple, just a matter of copy and pasting the html they supply you with and placing it at the bottom of your code page just before </body> If you go to your 'View' in your menu bar and click on 'view source' you will see my code page, down the bottom of the page there is a line of coding ending with urchinTracker, that's all there is to it. You will need to wait for 24 hours for the report to be available on line, and you do need to add the code to each page you would like to see the viewing information on. This is one of the reports I find invaluable as from the information you can ascertain if a particular page is a popular viewing source, whereas with my free site meter I can only see an overall report without seperate page analysis. Here is a screen shot of the reports overview
